Perth City Centre Management

City Centre Management is now considered essential to protect and improve the vitality and viability of town and city centres in the UK. In Scotland, many towns and cities have city centre management in place to provide an essential focus for identifying the needs of the city centre and driving initiatives forward.

The importance and value of city centres as places where people meet, work, shop, do business and enjoy leisure is now one of the major issues being addressed by government and local authorities.

Perth City Centre Management is a member of the Association of Town Centre Management (ATCM) which is a body of public sector professionals and private sector business people dedicated to promoting the concept and assisting in the implementation of town centre management.

The Aim

To sustain and improve the quality, vitality and viability of Perth city centre for all users through the concerted action of key stakeholders in co-operation with the community.

Key Objectives

  • Building relationships and improving communication with partners

  • Marketing, events development and promotion of Perth

  • Business development and training for city centre businesses

  • Monitoring and evaluation of the city centre

  • Development of Safer Cities Initiative

Perth City Centre Management's key objectives form the basis of its Action Plan which is prepared by the City Centre Manager.

Perth City Centre Action Group

The City Centre Manager liaises closely with Perth City Centre Action Group which represents the interests of the city centre area.

The Action Group which comprises a cross section of business and community interests assists with the representation of the whole community in Perth city centre. The main purpose of the group is to aid in the exchange of information and ideas affecting the prospects of Perth city centre and foster better understanding and co-ordination between public and private interests. In addition the group may initiate and action proposals which it feels are important to the wellbeing of the city centre.

Perth City Centre Management Function

Perth City Centre Management is part of the Business & Community Team within Planning & Regeneration, Perth & Kinross Council. It is also supported through the retail sector in Perth.

Safer City Centre Forum

Perth Safer City Centre Forum's main focus is to develop a range of measures to reduce the incidence of crime and the fear of crime, tackle environmental issues and improve community safety for the mutual benefit of the business community, the local community and individuals.

Examples of this include:

  • Radiolink - scheme operating between business both in daytime and evening economy, CCTV room and Police
  • Information sharing on criminal activity in Perth city centre between businesses, Perth City Centre Management and Tayside Police
  • PACE (Perth against Crime Exclusions)-  Civil and Criminal Exclusion Orders
  • Pubwatch Scheme
  • Taxi Marshals
  • Best Bar None Awards
  • Street Pastors
  • Park Mark Awards
  • Safer Shopping Award

The Forum welcomes the involvement of city centre businesses in crime prevention initiatives.
