Registration of food businesses

All Food Business Operators (FBO's) must register or seek approval of their businesses with their local Council at least 28 days before food operations commence.  Registration of businesses allows the local authority to keep an up to date list of all those premises in their area which require to be inspected for compliance with food law.

Approval is required in the case of certain food businesses dealing in products of animal origin.

Some of the information regarding the business is placed on a public register. No personal details, other than the proprietor's name, are placed on this register.

A food business registration form must be completed by FBO's for each establishment under their control and submitted to Perth & Kinross Council. There is no charge for registering a food business, and it does not need to be renewed at any time. Any changes to the nature or type of business being operated however must be notified to the local authority at the time of changing.

In order to assist new food businesses in the Perth and Kinross area the Food Safety Division regularly run a free New Food Business Seminar which aims to clarify current legal obligations in terms of food safety. Additional support in implementing the legal requirement to operate an appropriate Food Safety Management System is also available free of charge.
