Food safety
The work of the Food Safety Division covers a wide range of food
related issues to protect the health of all consumers living in,
working in, or visiting Perth and Kinross and is split between the
subjects of
Food Hygiene and
Food Standards.
It is the aim of the Food Safety Division to ensure that all
food offered for sale to the public is safe for consumption and
meets all the legal standards required for composition, labelling
and advertising.
The work of the team is set out in an annual team plan which
identifies the specific targets for the year including inspection
and sampling programmes to ensure that food businesses in Perth and
Kinross are visited at an appropriate risk based frequency to check
their compliance status with the relevant food safety legislation
applicable to their operations.A copy of the team plan for 2009/10
is available as a download.
The Food Safety team base their enforcement strategy on a policy
of support to business allied to the consistent application of the
Council's approved enforcement policy, in an effort to build an
effective partnership with local food business's for the benefit of
all stakeholders. This approach has been in place for a number of
years and has been officially recognised by the award in July 2009
of the new Cabinet Office's Customer Service Excellence Award
Scheme as a model of excellent service provision.
The Award which runs for a three year period was initially granted
in 2000 when it was known as the Charter Mark Award and has been
successfully retained at subsequent audits in 2003 and 2006. In
order to achieve the Award the Food Safety Division has had to
demonstrate continuous improvement and customer satisfaction to the
Cabinet Office's stringent quality standards. A copy of the most
recent assessment is available as a download. Customer
feedback on service provision during 2008/09 is also available as a
download.
In 2008/09 the net cost of the Food Safety Service in Perth
& Kinross was £441,000 which equates to a figure of
£3.06 per year per head of population.
