Gas Safe Register
The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 deal with
the safe installation, maintenance and use of gas systems,
including gas fittings, appliances and flues, mainly in domestic
(houses, flats, etc) and commercial premises, e.g. offices, shops,
hotels and public buildings etc. The Regulations place
responsibilities on a wide range of people, including those
installing, servicing, maintaining or repairing gas appliances and
other gas fittings as well as suppliers and users of gas, including
certain types of landlords.
The Regulations require work on gas fittings to be carried out only
by a competent person; and employers of gas fitting engineers.
Employers of persons and individuals carrying out such work are
required to be approved by the HSE. For the past 17 years this
approval has taken the form of a registration
scheme administered by the Council for Registered Gas
Installers (CORGI).
From 1st April 2009, in relation to gas work for which registration
is required, gas engineering businesses operating in Great
Britain need to be registered with the Gas Safe Register
Scheme which has been introduced to replace the previous CORGI
scheme.
Who is affected by the new
scheme
All
installers who are currently carrying out gas work should now be
registered and will need to continue to be registered in the
future. The scope of registration will not change and will still
require installers working on domestic, non-domestic, commercial,
natural gas and liquid petroleum gas installations to be
registered.
