Perth - Ontario - Canada
This twinning was formed in 2000. The town of Perth, Ontario invited a delegation from Perth to visit Canada to help celebrate the millennium in July of that year and at the same time form a twinning link.
Perth & Kinross already had strong links with Perth, Ontario. Over the last few years the two communities, in particular the Pipe and Drum Bands had formed exchanges and maintained strong friendships.
The two Perths have a great deal in common. They are both situated on the 'Tay' and their histories share many similarities.
During the visit in July 2000 many discussions took place between local Councillors, the Chief Executive and Provost Mike O'Malley. What struck the delegation most was the distinct sense of community that existed in Perth, Ontario. The citizens believe firmly in a culture of self help. Businesses and community based organisations become involved in the support of civic projects.
In terms of local democracy, the Mayor of Perth, Ontario is directly elected and holds both a civic and executive position. None of the nine Councillors represents a political party, nor do they represent individual wards.
The link is viewed as having strong potential for tourism. There is widespread Canadian interest in Perthshire and the Scottish heritage is valued very highly in Ontario.
In August 2001 Mayor Lana March and a delegation visited Perth to seal the link. During the visit the group visited a number of key tourist attractions, discussed the economic potential of the link and confirmed its commitment to develop the link.
