These are controlled by the EC Fertilisers (Scotland) Regulations 2006 which lay down conditions with respect to content and marking of packaging.
Perth & Kinross is a very rural area, so farming is of great significance to its economy.
We carry out unannounced visits to manufacturers to take samples of solid and liquid fertilisers.
The method of sampling is similar to how we sample feedingstuffs.
The samples we take are sent of to the Public Analyst, to ensure they contain the correct declared percentage levels of the nutrients, Nitrogen, Phosporous and Potassium.
Any discrepancies between the declared and actual content are subsequently investigated.
Garden fertilisers are also covered by the Agriculture Act.
