Location and facilities

There is a wide range of parks and open spaces in Perth and Kinross; from the open expanses of the North and South Inches, down to small roadside flower beds.

Policy on open space is set out in the Scottish Executive Planning Advice Note 65 Planning and open space, where it is described as an invaluable asset.

PAN 65 identifies different types of open space including:
  • green corridors
  • sports areas
  • natural/semi-natural greenspaces
  • playspace for children and teenagers
  • amenity greenspace (eg areas at roundabouts or junctions)
  • public parks and gardens
  • civic spaces
The guidance also recommends levels of availability for greenspace and the creation of an Open Space Strategy:

A strategy should comprise three elements:
  1. an audit of existing open space provision; which ran through 2006 along with a series of public meetings.
  2. an assessment of current and future requirements; and
  3. a strategy statement with a clear set of priorities and actions. This is the next task.
We are developing a hierarchy of open spaces in terms of strategic, local and neighbourhood importance.

We are working to steadily improve the quality and availability of open space both in new development and existing areas.
