Active Schools
The aim of Active Schools is for all children and young people
to get and stay active. It is one of a number of national
initiatives that have been supported by the Scottish Government
with the purpose of addressing Scotland's inactive, unfit and
increasingly overweight population.
Perth and Kinross has a network of Active Schools Co-ordinators who
work together with schools, parents and communities to offer
children and young people the opportunities and motivation to adopt
active, healthy lifestyles, now and into adulthood.
Linking schools and communities
Enabling the creation of pathways from schools to sports clubs
in the wider community is essential, and Active Schools staff aim
to work in partnership with community sports and physical activity
clubs to strengthen these pathways so that children and young
people can participate regularly in local clubs. For example,
Active Schools staff support our local sports clubs to achieve the
first level of the Perth and Kinross Accredited Club Excellence
Scheme. They also facilitate club 'taster' sessions for children
and young people and events in schools to help promote sports
clubs.
Out of school hours activities
Active Schools staff are responsible for developing and
supporting volunteer led, sustainable physical activity and sport
opportunities that take place out with school hours, both within
the school and wider community.
Volunteering and leadership
Recruiting, supporting, training and sustaining a network of
volunteers including senior pupils, coaches, leaders and teachers
who in turn deliver physical activity and sport opportunities is a
key role of our Active Schools staff. Active Schools is looking to
expand its volunteer database, and is able to offer access to free
training opportunities to volunteers who meet the criteria.
