Sports Development
Sports Development is not just about helping develop sport but
the individual participating in sport and the organisations that
deliver sports opportunities in our local communities.
The Council's Sports Development Team works to promote recruitment,
participation and performance in all aspects of sport within Perth
and Kinross. This includes those playing, coaching, refereeing,
managing, volunteering and watching sport. They do this by working
together in partnership with local sports clubs, volunteers,
national governing bodies and leisure providers in a wide range of
projects.
The key areas of work for the Sports Development Team are:
Support for clubs
Clubs play a vital role in increasing participation and
improving the quality and range of opportunites available to our
local communities. Perth and Kinross is fortunate to have a wide
diversity of clubs and a significant number of active volunteers.
The Perth and Kinross Accredited Club Excellence Scheme (PACES) has
been developed to provide a framework of support which helps clubs
to develop. It provides a set of standards that can be recognised
by parents, teachers, the general public and facility managers,
raising the profile of local clubs and recognising the hard work
delivered by their volunteers. Clubs can benefit from three levels
of accreditation in the scheme - Foundation, Community and
Development.
Coaching and leadership
Coaches are the lifeblood of sport and to maintain participation
and attract new people to take part it is important to have a range
of well qualified, skilled and enthusiastic paid staff and
volunteers. The Sports Development Team produce an annual coach
education and development calendar which offers opportunities to
develop coaching practice. Further support for coaches is offered
through the Coach Development Group which is a partnership of
organisations that provides funding and advice. For more
information contact the Sports Development Team (details on the
right).
A key priority is to encourage young people into coaching and
leadersip roles and we are able to give this group dedicated
support through the work of the Council's Club Sport Development
Officer.
Community Sports Partnerships
The Council believes that local people play a vital role in
establishing successful sporting communities. The development of
Community Sports Partnerships will help to develop this important
role in shaping service delivery. Working together, planning
together and finding solutions together makes for better local
services and encourages local clubs and groups to be more
involved.
To support the delivery of the Olympic and Commonwealth games
legacy programmes Sports Development have established six Community
Sports Partnerships. These bring together local club and Sports
Council members from the voluntary sector with professional support
from Sports Development, Active Schools and Live Active
Leisure.
Improving performance
There are several Perth and Kinross performance squads which
have been created to develop talent and support young athletes to
move on to regional, national and international levels. Targeted
support is also available for those who show the potential to
compete at the very highest levels of their chosen sport.
If you would like to get involved or require any further
information about any of these areas please contact the team
