Errol Primary School

Background

The project to upgrade Errol Primary School began onsite early in 2008. This project combined refurbishment of the existing main school building with a dramatic and complimentary new build extension.  Extensive landscaping works have completed the transformation of the school grounds to match the new building in a stunning addition to Errol village.

Previous accommodation was spread throughout several buildings.  The project to upgrade and extend Errol Primary School has resulted in a state of the art, seven class, primary school with integrated nursery, providing an environment for learning and teaching that embraces all current standards and practices.  The school hall gymnasium and general purpose rooms offer facilities for community use.

Throughout, the Errol community as a whole has been fully supportive and committed to working with Education & Children's Services to make the project a success.

A Learning Experience

The construction phase began early in 2008 and ended in August 2009. During this period, pupils and staff were decanted  into a custom built temporary modular school located on the site of the school's playing fields. With close proximity to the building works and regular updates via the Headteacher, all pupils and staff were able to witness the transformation of their school from the ground up.

Design

The striking building design features locally sourced brickwork and makes use of exposed glulam structural beams both inside and out.

Teaching spaces throughout have been designed to meet or exceed current guidelines in an open plan design. Spacious and bright accommodation with breakout areas and custom designed Teaching Wall modules incorporating electronic Smartboards, all contribute to an environment fit for 21st Century education.

The mechanical and electrical installations embrace all that is new and good in environmental design. The new building is served by automatic lighting controls and underfloor heating: solar panels pre-heat water and an electronic display provides a teaching aid to the pupils.

Education & Children's Services purchased the former petrol station and bus depot land to accommodate the projected rising roll. Demolition of the buildings on this site was concluded in February 2012. An eco garden is being formed, with work expected to be concluded by end of March 2012
