Perth High School Upgrade
As part of an extensive upgrade programme for those Perth
& Kinross secondary schools that are not part of the Investment
In Learning (IIL) Programme, works at Perth High School are
nearing completion.
Phase 1 (completed) - programme comprised:
- the complete refurbishment of 7 science labs, with new
custom-designed and fitted laboratory furniture
- refurbishment of 2 classrooms
- the creation of a further 2 teaching rooms by
converting and refurbishing existing accommodation
- review and upgrading of heating and radiators
- review and upgrading of electrical and services
infrastructure
- extensive works to ensure that the establishment is made
accessible and compliant with the requirements of relevant
Disability Discrimination legislation
In particular, the works to improve accessibility involved:
- installation of 4 platform lifts
- installation of 11 ramps
- conversion of existing accommodation to create 8 new
disabled toilets, one of which also incorporates a shower
- review and upgrade of handrails in various areas
- the undertaking of a door replacement programme
Following the above the secondary programme continued to deliver
the following:
Phase 2 - programme comprised:
- Upgrade of all existing toilets which is now complete.
Following innovative design elements in all our community campuses
that include secondary schools, the facilities provided are
separate male and female cubicles with a communal wash station as
part of an open area, and have been designed with a range of aims
including increased visibility and counteracting bullying and
anti-social behaviour.
This has since received a positive response from other schools
and pupils. Where upgrade projects are taking place in other
secondary schools this design philosophy is being further
implemented.
Currently on site:
- A new synthetic floodlit pitch which is now nearing completion.
This pitch is made from a Third Generation artificial surface. Also
included in the design is secure perimeter fencing, floodlighting,
athletics training area and appropriate equipment. This has been
designed mainly for hockey/football usage based on the requirements
of the School Curriculum and the Leisure Needs Analysis.
At Design stage:
- Design work is underway for an additional PE facility to
enhance indoor PE provision.
Consultation
Construction work began in June 2009. Extensive liaison
continues to take place between school management and Projects
Support Team representatives to ensure that the minimum of
disruption is caused to learning and teaching at the school during
the construction works.
