Woodlea Cottage
Woodlea Cottage was completed in June 2010.
This establishment will update Perth & Kinross Council's
curricular 'residence experience' and respite provision for young
people within the age range of 3 to 18 who have complex, multiple
and enduring needs.
Bringing together the delivery of these aspects of education and
care under a single staff team will offer a more integrated and
consistent response to children and their families. It also
provides the best opportunity to maximise the availability of the
resource.
This establishment replaces the previous provision of Woodlea
and Capers Cottage and complements the recently opened Fairview
School.
Facilities
The building comprises 7 bedrooms within a comfortable domestic
style setting. Each bedroom is adjacent to a shower or hi-tech
bathroom equipped with ceiling hoists and specialist bath. There
are also kitchen, dining and sitting areas, staff office,
laundry and medical room.
The layout has also been developed to afford an independent flat
which will provide supported living experiences to meet the
individual needs of a child or young person whilst retaining
flexibility throughout the establishment.
The garden includes patio, soft play area and trampoline, laid out
amongst grassed areas and shrubbery and incorporating mature trees.
Design
A number of specialist advisors were consulted on the design of
this establishment, including representatives of the Scottish
Institute for Residential Childcare and the Care Commission, as
well as Council ASN childcare and education professionals.
The design was created in-house by architects from the
Council’s Environment Service Property Team from a Brief of
Requirements developed by the Education & Children’s
Services' Projects Support Team. The main contractor was Morrison
Construction Ltd.
Award Winner
The project was awarded Bronze in the category 'Improving
Efficiency and Quality' in Perth & Kinross Council's Securing
the Future Awards 2011.
