Our vision in Perth and Kinross is for all learners to achieve to their fullest potential. We want all our children and young people to become responsible citizens, successful learners, effective contributors and confident individuals. We believe that all staff have a key role to play in Creating a Curriculum for Excellence in schools. To support this we have developed a strategy for Creating a Curriculum for Excellence from 2009 onwards. This is an integral part of the Policy Framework. We expect all schools to take forward developments in the curriculum, learning and teaching in line with the key principles set out in the strategy. The approach to creating a curriculum for excellence underpins the Raising Achievement Strategy [pdf 744KB] and focuses on raising levels of attainment and achievement through access to high quality learning experiences for all learners. The strategy has five parts as set out below.
Creating the Curriculum for Excellence Part 1: 3 - 18 Curriculum Framework [pdf 332KB] provides the overarching framework within which schools should plan curriculum pathways from 3 to 18 to develop children and young people's skills for life, work and learning and prepare all learners for post school transitions to the world of employment, education and training best matched to their needs and ambitions. Creating the Curriculum for Excellence Part 2: Effective Learning and Teaching [pdf 812KB] provides clear guidance on effective learning and teaching approaches at all stages, including play and learning in the early years and a commitment to train teachers in collaborative learning approaches. Creating the Curriculum for Excellence Part 3: Enterprise and Vocational Education [pdf 422KB] provides clear guidance on creating enterprise and vocational opportunities that are best matched to the individual needs and ambitions of learners. Creating the Curriculum for Excellence Part 4: Supporting and improving Learning [pdf 474KB] through Assessment provides clear guidance on the use of assessment information to ensure that children and young people's learning neeeds are met effectively. The strategy is supported by a three year rolling plan (Creating a Curriculum for Excellence Part 5) [pdf 48KB] which is reviewed and updated annually. Strategy for the Roll out of the Journey to Excellence Part 5: [pdf 345KB] provides details of the Perth and Kinross strategy for making progress on the Journey to Excellence. In taking forward these developments, the key criterion is that they should lead to educational gain for all pupils. Any school introducing more flexible and innovative approaches should evaluate the initiative using the key principles set out in Setting the Standard for Learning: Realising Potential [pdf 356KB] and the questions set out in Advice on Evaluating Flexibility and Innovation in the Curriculum [pdf 40KB]. The advice takes full account of the response of Perth and Kinross to Improving Scottish Education [pdf 150KB] published in January 2009.
