Blairgowrie High School upgrade works progressing well

Last updated | 08/02/2012

Works to improve and upgrade facilities at Blairgowrie High School to enhance provision for pupils and staff are currently ongoing. Perth & Kinross Council's Lifelong Learning Convener, Councillor Liz Grant saw how progress is being made on Tuesday 7th February 2012 when she visited the school.

Priorities for improvement were agreed with Blairgowrie High School's senior management team and subsequently approved by the Council's School Estate Sub Committee in late 2009. After initial groundworks, the two-stage upgrade project began in Summer 2011, and already the first phase has been completed. This comprises the forming of a new bus turning area and drop-off point and refurbishment of two Home Economics rooms, along with associated works.

Phase two is now underway and consists of the creation of the school's new 'Hub', including provision of extra classrooms, office space and refurbished social area for pupils with a food kiosk, through the refurbishment of the existing four-storey building's ground floor. Plans are being proposed that would allow pupils to check out the lunch menu at the kiosk via a special smartphone app.

Once this part of the project is complete, anticipated to be during April 2012, it is intended that further works will be carried out. in the parts of the school vacated by pupils and staff moving into the new Hub. These are planned to cover the formation of new and improvement of existing music rooms, refurbishing the English base, relocation of the Religious Education department and creation of a new Mathematics classroom, as well as improvements to staff toilet facilities in the main school building.

Councillor Grant said: "The project to upgrade and improve Blairgowrie High School will make a difference for pupils and staff, both by enhancing the facilities available for learning and teaching and by improving the general environment of the school. I am excited to see the progress being made here and I am sure the school community is looking forward to using the full improved range of provision in the near future. This is a further good example of our continuing commitment as a Council to improving the school estate."
