Over five tonnes of textiles recycled so far through kerbside pilot

Perth & Kinross Council's trial Textile Collection Service began in October 2011 to expand the range of materials collected as part of the Kerbside Recycling Service. To date, more than 5 tonnes - that's about the weight of five average-sized family cars - has been donated to Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS), via Clothes Aid, and to Capability Scotland through the Council-organised Kerbside Collections.

From Monday 6th February 2012, householders in Bridge of Earn, Bridgend and Gannochy, the Western Edge of Perth, Kinross, parts of Blairgowrie and South Auchterarder will be receiving through their door a reminder leaflet about the pilot scheme and a new donation bag, for passing on unwanted textiles for reuse and recycling at the kerbside each fortnight.

William Gallacher of Clothes Aid said: "We are delighted with the range and quality of items that are put out in the collection bags on the blue-lidded bin day. The textiles are sold through the CHAS shops in Kinross and Dunfermline and overseas to raise money for CHAS, raising vital funds to provide the only hospice services in Scotland for children and young people with life-shortening conditions."

Simple step to support good causes

Sophie Wilbraham of Capability Scotland added: "Capability Scotland collects donations at the kerbside for selling-on in our Charity Shops - one in Perth and the other soon to open in Crieff - to achieve the goals of providing education, employment and core services for disabled people across Scotland. Any textiles that are of poorer quality can either be sold abroad for reuse or instead be recycled into industrial rags, both generating an income for the charity."

Environment Convener, Councillor Alan Grant explained further: "The Council is working with these local organisations at the kerbside to divert textiles from landfill. This provides the most convenient method of saving the resources, reducing disposal costs and supporting two very worthwhile causes. We have had a positive response so far to the trial and I would encourage households in the pilot areas to keep on recycling their unwanted textiles."
