Countryside management plans under consideration

Last updated | 22/02/2008

Management plans for two countryside sites in Perth and Kinross, including proposals to improve public access and information about the sites' amenities, will be considered at the next Environment Committee on Wednesday 30 January.

The plans, for the Inner Tay Estuary Local Nature Reserve (LNR) and the Den of Alyth, will cover 2008 to 2013 and have been widely consulted on with landowners, environmental bodies and local communities.

The Inner Tay LNR forms part of the internationally important River Tay Special Area of Conservation managed jointly by Perth & Kinross Council, Dundee City Council, the Crown Estates and other organisations. It provides a valuable educational and leisure resource for residents and visitors. The management plan proposes path improvements to both the LNR and the adjacent Kingoodie Quarry and the development of new information boards and leaflets.

The Den of Alyth is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in East Perthshire which is well-used for walks and outdoor play. It also plays host to the annual 'Jam in the Den' event and other community activities. Woodland management, additional on-site information and access improvements are planned.

Councillor Alan Grant, Convener of the Environment Committee, said: "The Council looks after a diverse range of countryside sites in Perth and Kinross and works closely with the local community, landowners and partner organisations to ensure the sites provide opportunities for learning, biodiversity and leisure for local communities and visitors alike. The five-year plans before the Committee clearly set out how we will continue to conserve and enhance the Den of Alyth and the Inner Tay Estuary Local Nature Reserve."
