Kerbside recycling scheme set for further roll-out

Last updated | 22/02/2008

The next phase of Perth & Kinross Council's kerbside recycling scheme is scheduled to roll out this Spring, a report to the next Environment Committee will set out.

The Tulloch area in Perth, and parts of Auchterarder, Aberuthven and Crieff will become the next locations in Perth and Kinross for the scheme, supported by Scottish Government funding for national food waste trials.

The majority of householders in these areas will shortly be able to recycle paper, cardboard, cans and plastic bottles in blue lidded bins, and food and garden waste in existing brown lidded bins, with general waste collections in green lidded bins collected on alternate weeks. The aim of the scheme is to improve householders' access to recycling facilities and, as a result, direct more waste away from landfill.

Householder participation in the trial area for the scheme, which covered parts of Wellshill, Craigie and the Cleeve and Cherrybank areas of Oakbank in Perth, achieved an impressive 48% recycling rate in the first year, compared to an average of 33% in Perth and Kinross as a whole.

In addition, beginning in the summer of 2008, the collection of paper, cardboard, cans and plastic bottles in blue lidded bins, with general waste collections moving to alternate weeks, will be introduced to a further 47,000 households across the Perth and Kinross area over an 18 month period. This scheme is supported by the Council’s Investment in Improvement Fund.

Councillor Alan Grant, Convener of the Environment Committee, welcomed the continued roll-out of the service: "With Council and Scottish Government funding, we are in a position to continue expanding this initiative. It has already been well embraced by householders in parts of Perth, raising the recycling rate in those areas and helping divert more waste away from landfill.

"I would also like to make it clear as we move forward that the kerbside recycling scheme is an improvement to the services we provide. To that end, we will continue to make sure that local communities are informed well in advance of the transfer to the new scheme."
