National significance of museum and galleries collection brings support

Last updated | 22/02/2008

Recent recognition of the national significance of Perth & Kinross Council's museum and galleries collection has led to extra financial support to increase public access to and enhance care of the collection in the future.

A report to the next Lifelong Learning Committee highlights the Council's successful application to a Scotland-wide initiative to formally recognise nationally significant collections held by non-national organisations including councils. At the time of the award in October 2007, Perth & Kinross Council was the first local authority to have its entire collection recognised in that way.

Achieving this status has given the Council the opportunity to apply for additional funding which will support improvements to tourist signage and enable the purchase of new temporary display cases, to increase the range of items in the collection that can be displayed.

Councillor Liz Grant, Convener of Lifelong Learning, said: "National recognition for the importance of the Council's collection will, I believe, give us the chance to make the materials we have better known on a wider basis. The further funding we have been able to access through the national scheme will be put to good use, and we are now looking at other potential projects which could also be delivered through this extra support."
