On behalf of the David K Thomson Award Trustees, Provost John
Hulbert presented the Award for 2011 to Perthshire Brass on Friday
27 January 2012.
The band has been chosen to receive the inscribed quaich, framed
scroll and a cheque for £750 in recognition of their services
to music and the community.
Formed by George Annan senior in 1978 as Perthshire Youth Brass,
the band was set up as an opportunity for young players to continue
playing brass music beyond school age. The current band name came
into being in 1989 to reflect the growing average age of its
players.
Perthshire Brass has since then given local brass players the
chance to perform on both national and international stages,
including tours in Holland and New Zealand, and successes at the
Scottish Championships. The band are also well-known for their
performances at many events around Perth.
Band going from strength to strength
In 2007, George Annan junior took on the role of conducting the
group's small youth band, bringing back the Perthshire Youth Brass
title to subsequent top awards at the Scottish Youth Championships
and the Brass in the Park contest. He has now picked up the baton
for the senior band, with Jason Blyth becoming junior band
leader.
The Provost said: "Perthshire Brass are worthy recipients of the
David K Thomson Award, which I am delighted to present on behalf of
the Trustees. The commitment of the band members and supporters,
who are all volunteers, to provide great opportunities for players
to perform and excellent performances to the community, brings us
great pleasure to reward."
The David K Thomson Award Trust was set up by ex-Lord Provost David
K Thomson of Perth Town Council at the end of his six year period
of service in May 1972 from the proceeds of a Public Testimonial
Fund for his behalf.
The purpose of the Trust is "to make an Award or Awards preferably
annually to any person or persons residing within the County of
Perth or (after local government reorganisation) within the local
government District of Perth and Kinross who has or have in the
sole opinion of the Trustees either rendered service to the
community or achieved success in the sphere of sport and/or music
and/or art and/or other recreational or cultural activity".
