Last updated | 05/01/2012
People are reminded that Perth Museum and Art Gallery will be closed to the public until 5th March 2012 while refurbishment work is carried out.
The work includes wiring and minor refurbishment of the entrance hall, as well as preparation work in the galleries for three brand new exhibitions to be held in 2012.
The long-awaited arrival of The Carpow Logboat, one of the oldest and best preserved in Scotland, will be celebrated in an exhibition which explores the history of this amazing Bronze Age find and gives an insight into the work involved in its excavation and preservation.
Arctic Bound features the photography of Perth Museum’s first curator Alex Rodger, who travelled to the Arctic along with David Dickson in the 1890’s to collect specimens for the zoologist Professor D’Arcy Thompson. The exhibition includes some fascinating shots of life amongst the whalers and native people.
Four Seasons in One Day tells the story the story of Scotland’s turbulent weather and changing climate, through 150 years of unique photographs of Perthshire. From a Victorian tea party on the frozen River Tay to the devastating flood of 1993, the highs and lows of Scotland’s weather are revealed. The exhibition also explores the effects of weather and climate on Scotland since the last ice age 11,000 years ago, and the possible impact of climate change on our future.
Lifelong Learning Convener, Councillor Liz Grant, said: “This refurbishment work has been timed to coincide with the Museum and Art Gallery’s quietest time of the year. We apologise for any inconvenience the closure of the building might cause.
“When the refurbished PMAG opens in March there is much to look forward to, including the arrival of the Carpow Logboat, which promises to create a significant amount of interest.
"I have no doubt 2012 will be a very successful year for Perth Museum and Art Gallery, and I would encourage people to go along and enjoy this year’s superb line-up of exhibitions.”
Visitors can keep up to date with details of the refurbishment and forthcoming exhibitions on the museum’s web page here. Staff can be contacted during the museum closure on the regular museum number – 01738 632488 or via email at museums@pkc.gov.uk.
