Bin It and Win It scheme helps tackle litter

Last updated | 25/07/2008

Young people in Perth and Kinross once again have the chance to ‘Bin It and Win It’ under the scheme aimed at keeping the streets clear of litter.

The joint scheme run by Perth & Kinross Council, Perth Safer City Centre Forum and Perth and Kinross Leisure, is designed to encourage people aged 10-16 to use litter bins by giving them an added incentive.

Council litter officers patrolling areas in Perth and Kinross will be keeping an eye out for young people who use a litter bin to dispose of their litter and several will be chosen at random to receive a free gift voucher. The officer will hand winners a voucher on the day. This voucher then allows the winner to claim their prize, a free casual activities session courtesy of Perth and Kinross Leisure at any of its activity centres throughout the area. The session can be arranged for a suitable time for the winner.

Today the first winner, Stuart Carling, aged 12, from Alyth, will receive his prize for getting rid of his litter responsibly while in Perth.

Environment Convener Councillor Alan Grant commented “While most youngsters know right from wrong when it comes to dropping litter, there is still a minority who think it's ‘cool’ to drop litter to impress their friends. The Council ensures there are plenty of litter bins across the local area and hopefully, by adding a little bit of an incentive, even those youngsters in the minority will get into the habit of binning their litter.”

This incentive will run all year long with 10 winners chosen every month.
