Changes to Perth Pedestrianised Zone to come into effect soon

Perth & Kinross Council would like to remind residents and visitors that changes to the Perth Pedestrianised Zone and neighbouring streets will shortly come into operation.

Initially scheduled to come into effect on 21 July 2008, the changes will now begin operating on 28 July 2008 once works in the High Street are complete. Every effort is being made to keep disruption to businesses to a minimum during the works.

The pedestrianised zone will be extended to include Skinnergate and the section of the High Street between George Street and Skinnergate. Automatic street bollards will also be installed on the High Street between George Street and St John Street, to prevent unauthorised access when the zone is for pedestrian use only between 11am and 4pm daily.

Other changes which will come into effect on 28 July are:
  • Reversal of traffic flow along the High Street between Methven Street and Scott Street/Kinnoull Street. Some minor changes will be made as a result to Stagecoach Perth bus services which currently stop in this section of the High Street, with effect from Monday 21 July 2008.
  • Alteration to the zone's one-way system, with the only access point for vehicles being from Tay Street via the High Street; and
  • Restriction of access to Murray Street to taxis, cycles and deliveries to premises only.

The alterations to the pedestrianised zone and other streets in Perth city centre are being made following public consultations which identified concerns about road and pedestrian safety and the volume of traffic using the pedestrianised zone during the 11am-4pm restricted period.
