£2m LEADER funding announced for rural Tayside

The Rural Tayside Local Action Group (LAG) partnership is delighted to announce the successful outcome of a rural development funding bid.

The award of £2 million, under the LEADER programme, has been confirmed by the Scottish Government and the European Union.

It is part of the first tranche of money to be released under the £1.6 billion Scotland Rural Development Programme, designed to empower communities at a grass-roots level.

LEADER is an innovative rural development programme which aims to improve the quality of life and economic prosperity in rural communities through locally driven rural development initiatives and projects.

LEADER will be delivered by the Tayside LAG to areas and communities within rural Perth and Kinross and rural Angus. The LAG is made up of a number of partners including Perth & Kinross Council, Angus Council, Scottish Enterprise Tayside, the local Councils for Voluntary Service, the Forestry Commission, VisitScotland, and representatives from local rural groups.

The funds are aimed at stimulating the rural economy and building capacity in communities and business networks.

Community groups, business partnerships and collaborations of individuals, groups and partnerships can apply to the LEADER programme for funding towards a wide range of projects.

The programme is popular with many voluntary and community organisations, due to its bottom-up, community-driven and innovative approach to rural development.

Perth & Kinross Council's Convener of Enterprise and Infrastructure, Councillor John Kellas said: "LEADER is a great opportunity to boost the economies of rural areas in Tayside. I am delighted that this money has been awarded, and we will work with our partners to make sure it is used to maximum benefit."

Potential applicants can contact Perth and Kinross Grants Direct for any further information on 0845 605 2000 or Angus External Funding Team on 01307 473222.
