Council signs up to rugby partnership

Last updated | 11/06/2008

Perth & Kinross Council and Perthshire Rugby Club are coming together to encourage more participation and develop the sport locally, after a Service Level Agreement (SLA) was very recently signed by both organisations.

The SLA ties into the Council's objectives for sport and active recreation and the benefits this has for people of all ages.

Opportunities for playing rugby will be made available for children and young people from P4 age upwards, as well as for adults. Players' potential will be developed through a progressive set-up of learning, fitness and skills, led by qualified coaches and community development officers. Participation will continue to be promoted in local schools.

The Council will provide a grant of £15,000 a year towards the delivery of the three-year initiative which has been developed by Education and Children's Services and Perthshire Rugby Club. The Council recognises the Club’s approach to developing the sport and the impact this has had on the number of active players of all ages at the club.

Council Leader, Councillor Ian Miller, who joined representatives of Perthshire Rugby Club at the North Inch for the signing of the SLA, said: "Rugby is a popular sport nationally in Scotland and locally here in Perth and Kinross. The Council is looking, through the service level agreement with Perthshire Rugby Club, to deliver on its objectives to promote healthy, active lifestyles and encourage greater participation in sports and active recreation."
