Homecoming Scotland 2009 welcomed

Last updated | 17/06/2008

Perth & Kinross Council has today welcomed the announcement of Homecoming Scotland 2009, a celebration of Scotland's heritage, culture and great contributions to the world.

An inspirational programme of events, festivals and activities will be held across the country between Burns Night (25 January) and St Andrew's Day (30 November). The aim of Homecoming Scotland is to encourage people of Scottish descent, as well as anyone who loves Scotland, to come home in 2009 and take part in the celebration. 2009 is also the 250th anniversary of the birth of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns.

The Perth and Kinross contribution to Homecoming Scotland 2009 will be four diverse and exciting special musical events, as Provost of Perth & Kinross John Hulbert explained: "The International Youth Tattoo, Guildtown Bluegrass Festival, Perthshire Amber, and Polish Spring represent a fabulous, eclectic mix that will really appeal, both to a wide section of the Scottish diaspora in Europe and the wider world, and friends of Scotland old and new. The range of musical offerings reinforces the artistic and cultural credentials of Perth and Kinross and provides further strong reasons to visit the area at different times of the year."

He added: "I am also pleased to know that through the members of the Perth and Kinross Ancestral Tourism Group, services for visitors are being enhanced with new intiatives emerging from the Black Watch Museum and the recent opening of the Family History Centre. This means we can approach 2009, the Year of Homecoming, with confidence and ensure that the Perth and Kinross area plays a key role in the national celebrations."
