New employment support team launched

Last updated | 17/06/2008

A new Employment Support Team for people with learning disabilities will help to give more people access to employment opportunities in Perth and Kinross. The team has been launched by Perth & Kinross Council as part of its on-going development of learning disability services.

At the 'Can Work!' event on Tuesday 17 June, coinciding with national Learning Disabilities Week, carers and users of learning disabilities services found out how the new Team could help them.

Councillor Alasdair Wylie, Vice Convener of the Housing & Health Committee, who opened the event said:

"The learning disabilities services that we provide are going through an exciting period of development. Service users and their carers have told us that they want more access to jobs, and to leisure activities in their own communities, and we are responding to that.  We are working to provide services that fit around the person, rather than having the person fit around the service.

I am delighted to launch this new Employment Support Team. It will provide help and assistance when people often need it most in the job market - when they are trying to secure a job, and when they are settling into the demands of a new role. We all have talents, skills or something to contribute. This new Team will work to benefit both people with learning disabilities and their employers."

The Team will provide help with completing application forms, coaching to perform well at interviews, and coaching while in employment.

As part of Learning Disability Week (16-22 June) the Council also hosted a seminar in Perth on Monday, 16 June, to allow service users and carers to contribute to the development of more personalised services.
