Road works Perth City Centre update

The second phase of road works in Perth City Centre, designed to improve safety for pedestrians and motorists, will get underway next week (Monday 23 June 2008).

During the works, which are scheduled to be complete by 21 July 2008, Perth's Pedestrianised Zone will be extended to include Skinnergate and the section of the High Street between George Street and Skinnergate. Automatic street bollards will also be installed on the High Street between George Street and St John Street, to prevent unauthorised access when the Zone is for pedestrian use only between 11am and 4pm daily.

In addition, the one-way system within the Zone will be altered, with the only access point for vehicles, once the works are completed, being from Tay Street via the High Street.

Every effort will be made to keep disruption to businesses to a minimum during the works. Diversions will be in operation at times.

The changes to the Pedestrianized Zone follow public consultations which identified concerns about road and pedestrian safety and the volume of traffic using the pedestrian zone during the 11am-4pm period. Initial works carried out earlier this year saw the installation of new traffic signals to enable the flow of vehicles along the High Street between Methven Street and Scott Street/Kinnoull Street to be reversed, a change which is scheduled to come into operation on 21 July 2008. Bus services which currently use this section of the High Street will be rerouted as a result and information on new stopping arrangements will be available soon.
