Perth will play host this Sunday (8 June 2008) to what is expected to be the last ever reunion of the 51st Highland Division Veterans Association, with a spectacular parade in the city centre.
Following the dedication of a unique tapestry, depicting the Division's contribution to World War Two, during a special service in St John's Kirk of Perth, Division veterans and other WW2 veterans will go on parade, alongside serving soldiers from the 51st Highland, 7th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, Territorial Army members and army cadets. The parade will be accompanied musically by pipes and drums and a military band. A display of WW2 vehicles will also form part of the parade.
The main parade will follow a route including North St John's Place, King Edward Street and the High Street and the veterans will join the parade at the junction of the High Street and St John Street. The best vantage point for those wishing to particularly see the veterans will be at the foot of the High Street and on Tay Street.
Lord Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross Brigadier Melville Jameson and Provost John Hulbert will take the parade salute before those taking part gather at the 51st Highland Division Memorial on the North Inch for a remembrance service, led by the Very Reverend Dr. James Harkness. A flypast in honour of this final gathering of veterans will then be performed by Glasgow University Air Squadron.
The Provost said: "I hope residents and visitors alike will come out to see this very special parade take place. This is likely to be the very last reunion of the 51st Highland Divisions Veterans Association and will be a memorable occasion for everyone."
