Perth and Kinross Cycling Summer in full swing

A number of leisurely free bike rides around the beautiful countryside of Perth and Kinross have been organised during July as part of the area’s Cycling Summer 2010 programme.

A huge variety of rides, festivals and events have been organised throughout the summer to get more people out and onto their bikes, so they can discover the joys of cycling as a leisure activity.

A number of free Easy Rides have been included in the July programme, designed to encourage people to make the most of the amazing cycling opportunities that exist here in Perth and Kinross. These rides will be short, and aimed primarily at people who would like to do more cycling but don’t know where to take their bikes.

  • Bankfoot, Sunday 11 July, 11am. 15-mile ride on B-roads out to Little Glenshee. Meet at the war memorial below Auchtergaven Church, Bankfoot.
  • Crieff, Sunday 11 July, 11am - 15 miles on B roads with picnic stop. Meet in car park by Somerfield in Union Terrace.
  • Perth, Sunday 11 July, 11am - Bridge of Earn and round the Rhynd. Meet at Bell’s Sports Centre.
  • Birnam/Dunkeld, Sunday 11 July, 11am - 10-mile ride out to Murthly Castle. Meet at Birnam Institute.

A range of other rides has also been lined up in July.

On Sunday 18 July the ByCycle group will lead a Sunday Ride of 30-40 miles, starting from the Bell’s Sports Centre at 10am.

A Ride Around Alyth aimed at people new to cycling who want to try a longer ride  (30 miles) is being held on Saturday 24 July, leaving from Alyth Square at 10am.

On Sunday 25 July a Women on Wheels ride for ladies will take in cycle paths and quiet roads in Perth. Meet at Bell’s at 11am.

A lunchtime ride for workers in their lunch hours, or any other people who fancy taking part, will be held on Friday 30 July. The short ride along local paths will start from the Glover Street offices of Perth & Kinross Council at 12.15pm, and end at 1.30pm.

There's no need to book - just turn up with your bike and join in.

A full Cycling Summer programme is available to view by clicking the link at the top right of this page, and a brochure listing the events throughout the summer is available free at local libraries, council offices and other public buildings.
