New recycling centre opening hours to improve access for residents
Last updated | 21/03/2008
Plans to introduce enhanced opening hours for Perth & Kinross Council's recycling centres, improving access for residents and opportunities to recycle household waste, will be considered at the next Environment Committee on Wednesday 26 March 2008.
The proposals follow recent reviews of best practice nationally and consultation with centre users which highlighted extended opening hours as one of the key service improvements they would like to see.
With a programme of works currently underway to improve access to the centres and broaden the range of materials that can be recycled at each location, Councillors will be asked to approve new operating hours which will apply all year round. These changes would see the Recycling Centres at Crieff and Kinross open every day and an extension to opening hours during the winter months at Friarton Recycling Centre in Perth. If approved, the new hours would be introduced and publicised in due course.
The Committee will also consider a proposal for a future short-term pilot scheme to open Friarton an hour earlier in the morning, subject to appropriate operational arrangements being put in place.
Environment Convener, Councillor Alan Grant, said: "The Council wants to encourage local communities to recycle as much of their waste as possible and we are working at the moment to physically improve our recycling centres. The proposals before Committee complement those improvements, by increasing the opening hours and making facilities even more available to residents."
Vice-Convener, Councillor Lorraine Caddell added: "We are responding directly to the needs and views of local communities by expanding access to our recycling centres."
