William Soutar Writing Prize 2008 winner announced

The winner of the William Soutar Writing Prize 2008 was announced by novelist and short story writer Laura Hird on Saturday 8 March 2008, as part of the Writers' Day programme at the AK Bell Library in Perth.
Laura chose Merryn Glover's 'Pickings' as the winner from the 56 stories entered. Laura said “The language, dialogue, pace and vivacity of this piece was outstanding.” Merryn wins a week's writing course at the Moniack Mhor Arvon Centre in Inverness-shire.
Seven stories also received special mention as runners-up at the event. These are:
Notre Dame de Consolation, by Iain Mackintosh
Whatever the Sea Brings, by Heather Reid
Shona and the Bosoms, and Stalemate, both by Eve Thomson
Angel Milk, by Kenneth Stephen
Mascara by Maurice Gartshore, and
Tough Times by Caroline Mackay
