April showcases major community events for Perth 800

The busy programme of Perth 800 celebrations is set to continue in April, with the focus on cultural events organised by members of the local community.

The coming month will see a major photography exhibition unveiled at Perth Concert Hall by Perthshire Photographic Society, a Perth 800 Film Festival organised by Perth Film Society and a celebration of William Soutar's life overseen by local devotees of the famous Perth poet.

All these events have been conceived and organised by local people, who have seized the great opportunity presented to them by Perth 800.

Provost John Hulbert said: "One of the main aims of Perth 800 was to bring local people together and ensure that they get fully involved.

"I am delighted that organisations such as Perthshire Photographic Society, Perth Film Society and the Friends of William Soutar have come up with such imaginative ways of celebrating Perth 800. That's what this year of celebration is all about - local people who are proud of their city, showcasing all that is best about it. I look forward to seeing the results of all their hard work. I'm sure everyone who attends these events will be impressed.

"One of the themes of Perth 800 is culture, and these events organised by local people certainly illustrate what a rich and thriving local cultural scene we have here in Perth."

The Perthshire Photographic Society exhibition, Perth and Kinross Today, is made up of 100 (framed) images showing the diverse range of interests and activities in the area. It will be open to the public at the Concert Hall from Sunday 4 April, before it moves to Birnam Institute (and then Pitlochry Festival Theatre) later in the year. It will also visit Perth's German twin town, Aschaffenburg, next year.

Perth Film Society's Fair City Film Festival will have the theme 'Cities on Film'. From Friday 23rd April it will feature films that were inspired by various different cities, such as Paris, Je t'aime; La Dolce Vita; and New Town Killers. It will also feature short films by Perthshire school students, and various talks and presentations, including a visit by Channel 4's Director of Nations and Regions, Perth's very own Stuart Cosgrove.

The Friends of William Soutar Society hope to promote the poet's work to a wider audience by holding a lunchtime lecture on April 28 and a 'Soutar Walk' around Perth on April 29. The guided poetry walk will bring to life the works of Soutar by taking in places where he spent part of his life in Perth.
