Chance to dance at Murrayfield for young people

Last updated | 04/03/2010

Secondary pupils from Perth and Kinross with a passion for dance could perform at the home of Scottish rugby later this year as part of a major international competition.

Perth & Kinross Council's Active Schools programme is hosting the 'Move It' dance programme run by educational and events specialist Pro-Excel during the Easter holidays, which will give up to 80 young people from local secondary schools the chance to work with a leading choreographer. The pupils chosen will design, rehearse and ultimately perform a stunning dance show at Murrayfield as part of the game day entertainment for the forthcoming Edinburgh 7s competition in May 2010 as part of the IRB World Sevens tour in May 2010. Their performance will be seen by TV viewers across the UK and around the world.

Auditions have already begun locally and the next date for young people wanting to get involved is Monday 15th March 2010 at the Glenearn Community Campus, Glenearn Road, Perth from 4pm to 6pm. All young people attending secondary schools in Perth and Kinross are invited to come along: there will be open audition slots at 4pm and 5pm on the day. The Move It workshop will be held from Monday 12th to Friday 16th April, with the final performance taking place at Murrayfield on the weekend of 29 - 30 May 2010.

The Council's Lifelong Learning Convener, Councillor Liz Grant said: "Our Active Schools programme is working to give children and young people more opportunities to take part in physical activity through sports and recreation. The Move It programme gives our secondary pupils a fantastic chance to perform at a major event, which I am sure will be a very memorable experience. Initial auditions have already shown that enthusiasm and interest among young people locally is high and we want to encourage more girls and boys to come along to the next session in Perth."

Director of Pro-Excel, Liam O’Reilly added: “We have delivered these projects across England and Northern Ireland for the last seven years, with performances in some of the most high profile stadia in the UK. We are really excited to bring the project to Scotland and to work with the talented students up here. This project aims to offer young people a real insight into the world of professional dance, and they will get to dance at one of the world’s most iconic stadia in front of many, many thousands of people. This will be an event they will never forget and I would also encourage as many people as possible to come down to the auditions!”
