Council to mark WWF earth hour

Last updated | 25/03/2010

Leader of Perth & Kinross Council, Councillor Ian Miller pledged Council support for the international Earth Hour event, when he met a representative of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Perth.

More than one hundred countries across the world will take part in Earth Hour, by switching off lights for one hour at the same time on Saturday 27 March. In Britain the switch off is scheduled for 8.30pm.

The event is organised annually by WWF to demonstrate concerns about climate change and highlight the need to save energy. In previous years, the lights on the Eiffel Tower, on Sydney Harbour Bridge and other iconic buildings have been put out in support.

Councillor Miller said:

"The Council will be playing our part by switching off the lights on Perth Bridge, at the AK Bell Library, and at Perth Museum and Art Gallery. Earth Hour serves as a good reminder that wherever we are, we can all do something to support the planet we depend upon to live. Cutting down on the energy we use, not just for Earth Hour, but whenever possible, is something I am sure we can all do in some way. I would encourage everyone to consider what they can do to save energy, whether at home or work and safeguard our planet for future generations."
