First aid training for Perth bar staff

Last updated | 24/03/2010

A total of 40 bar staff from 14 Perth city centre pubs and clubs took training courses in emergency first aid skills today (Wednesday 24 March).

The training scheme has been developed through a partnership initiative involving Perth City Centre Management, Ocean Medical Training, Perth Pubwatch and Diageo, as part of the Best Bar None Awards for Scotland.

The move follows a pilot course which was run last year, which proved very popular and beneficial.

Two half-day courses were run at Sportsters/City nightclub, South Methven Street. The courses have been developed specifically for pubs and clubs personnel.

The Best Bar None Awards focus on public safety and customer care. They offer each applicant an opportunity to demonstrate that their premises are focused on important issues as prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, prevention of public nuisance and protection of children from harm.

Ian Campbell, Best Bar None co-ordinator for Perth, said: “These courses will enable licensed premises to have one trained first aider on duty at all times. This is one of the target criteria for the National Best Bar None Awards which we deliver in Perth and is a positive additional skill for staff to learn.”

Rod Cain of Ocean Medical Training added: “First aid is an important life skill that everyone should have. It's quick and easy to learn, and knowing the basics could help save someone's life in an emergency. We're delighted to team up with Perth & Kinross Council to offer this vital training to the city's bar staff."

Community Safety Partnership Convenor, Councillor Willie Robertson, said: “This training for staff is welcome. It is our aim that everyone can enjoy the vibrant night-time economy of Perth safely, and having trained first-aiders in our bars will provide additional reassurance to the public.”
