North Inch Community campus moves closer to opening

Last updated | 31/08/2010

North Inch Community Campus in Perth today (Monday 29 March 2010) became the third 'hub' community campus to be handed over to Perth & Kinross Council as part of its £136m Investment in Learning Programme.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Ian Miller received the keys to the campus, which will be the new home for secondary pupils of St John's RC Academy from Monday 19 April, and to primary and nursery pupils from late Autumn 2011.

The campus will also be fully open to the local community from Monday 19th, with introductory opening sessions from 3pm to 10pm Monday to Friday in the weeks beginning 5th and 12th April.

In addition the community library will be open week days between 6th and 16th April, from 10am to 6pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and until 7pm Tuesday and Thursday.

The hub campus brings together state of the art facilities for school pupils and also the local community. Modern classrooms and teaching resources will provide a high-quality learning and teaching environment for pupils and staff.

The wide range of facilities for community use include a fitness suite, sports halls, dance studio, outdoor football pitch, meeting rooms, a recording studio, a conference suite and a hall with cinema-style projection.

The campus brings a brand new library to the community. Residents can look forward to enjoying 8,000 new books for adults, 5,500 new books for children, 650 new cds and dvds, free fast broadband internet and wi-fi, as well as events such as Bookstart Rhyme Time and storytelling for children.

Staff from a range of services will be based at the campus to deliver services on site or in the wider community. These include youth work and adult learning services, as well as community workers and active schools co-ordinators. The sports facilities will be managed by Perth & Kinross Leisure.

From late Autumn 2011, an all weather-pitch and multi-use games area will be added to the campus' facilities.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Ian Miller said: "The key aim behind our Investment in Learning programme is to benefit children, young people and local communities with high quality education and community facilities. The state of the art facilities which it provides will greatly support our teachers in their work and our pupils in their learning. The resources available for the local community to use are equally impressive. I would encourage everyone to take advantage of the taster opening sessions to find out what the campus has to offer."

Construction of the campuses and their ongoing maintenance is being delivered through a 30 year partnership between Perth & Kinross Council and the Axiom Education consortium.

Neil Revie of Axiom, who handed the keys to Councillor Miller said:

"The campus is tremendous. Its outstanding facilities provide so much opportunity for education and leisure activities."
