The 2007-8 annual performance report for the Council's Education and Children's Services will be put before the Lifelong Learning Committee on Wednesday 21 May 2008. This will highlight examples of good practice and progress made on key areas of work.
Working towards achieving six key service objectives by 2011, the Council Service has over the past year taken forward wide-ranging actions across all six. Examples of this include:
- very positive Care Commission reports in relation to residential, foster care, adoption, through care and day care of children and young people
- development of indoor and outdoor sports and leisure activities for children with profound disabilities
- good progress on implementing Curriculum for Excellence in local schools
- establishment of very effective international partnerships including links being built with China
- increased opportunities for training and support for young people
- national recognition for work to develop Parent Councils
- a continued reduction in the number of persistent young offenders in partnership with other agencies locally
- significant increases in support for cultural development through a diverse range of events and initiatives across local communities
-significant increases in the number of visits to the councils museums
- more involvement in citizenship activities for young people
The report highlights a number of case studies which show both innovative and good practice of several projects and initiatives aimed at benefiting children, young people and their families and communities. Many targets have been met or exceeded and plans for continuous improvement are also set out, covering all aspects of Education and Children's Services' work.
Lifelong Learning Convener, Councillor Liz Grant said: "This report gives an in-depth reflection of the broad range of work carried out by Education and Children's Services and the positive impact it is having. I am delighted that we have achieved so much in the past year and our commitment to continue to progress and improve is clearly stated here."
The report will subsequently be remitted to the Scrutiny Committee on 11 June.
