Changes planned to skip hire service

Plans to alter Perth & Kinross Council's skip hire service will be put before the next Environment Committee on Wednesday 4 June 2008.
The Council currently operates a skip hire service to both householders and businesses, with the vast majority of skips hired by commercial customers. On average, around 4,000 tonnes of waste are collected through the skips each year. A survey of commercial users last year indicated general satisfaction with the service.
Further research by the Council has also identified support among businesses for a service where they could recycle waste timber and plate glass.
In the light of these findings, and the continued drive to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, Councillors will be asked to agree that the skip hire service is altered to put the emphasis on collecting recyclable and compostable waste, with only any residual waste (that cannot be recycled or composted) collected by the Council as general refuse.
The new focus of the service would also enable the Council to use some of its existing skip vehicles to collect the increasing amounts and different types of waste being deposited at Recycling Centres and Points.
Environment Convener, Councillor Alan Grant said: "The skip hire service is well-used and well thought of and we want to continue to provide a useful service to households and businesses. The Council, however, also has to consider how skip hire can be tied in with the need to divert more waste from landfill. These proposals set out what I believe is the most effective way forward."
