Children meet Jock the Giant

Last updated | 30/05/2008

Pupils from small schools in Perth and Kinross recently took part in a special event at Perth Concert Hall bringing together a range of arts activities.

Around 50 P1 to P7 children from Struan, Glenlyon, Blairingone, Logiealmond, Strone of Cally and Straloch Primary Schools attended the event, after working on dance, music, drama and art and design ideas developed with the help of their teachers and the Council's Expressive Arts Co-ordinator.

Writer and storyteller Alan Laing began the Concert Hall event with a story about Jock the Giant, and then took part in a 'hot seating' session about Jock to give the children a further insight into his character.

They then presented the tartans they had designed for Jock and talked about their take on the character to the other schools. Each school produced either a 3D or painted version of ‘Jock’. They also created a Scottish dance and learned songs about the giant.

At the end of the afternoon, parents and Councillors came to a presentation of what the children had devised and learned. It is planned that a series of stories and activities based around Jock the Giant will be developed and shared among the schools who took part.

Lifelong Learning Convener, Councillor Liz Grant said: "This was a fun afternoon for everyone - the children enjoyed the chance to share what they had created, and the event will also lead to additional activities for the classroom."
