Progress on developing an innovative hub to support the learning and teaching of Chinese language and culture will be the subject of a visit by a delegation from China to Perth High School this afternoon (Wednesday 7 May 2008).
Four officials from Hanban, the Office of Chinese Language Council International, will be visiting the school accompanied by senior officials from Perth & Kinross Council's Education and Children's Services and from Learning & Teaching Scotland, which is currently working with Hanban to develop Confucius Classrooms across Scotland. At present there are only two 'hubs' in Scotland, at Perth High and the City of Edinburgh Classroom based at St George's School for Girls.
The delegation will be greeted by pupils performing Chinese music and dance. They will then see a Mandarin lesson taking place and meet with senior pupils who visited Shanghai last year and with the school’s Chinese language assistants.
Lifelong Learning Convener, Councillor Liz Grant said: "We are very pleased to welcome the delegation from Hanban today. They will get a comprehensive and informative view of how we are working to develop the Confucius Classrooms hub at Perth High."
Bernard McLeary, Chief Executive of Learning and Teaching Scotland, said: “Confucius Classrooms are very much a part of offering our children and young people a varied international education and play a meaningful role in achieving all four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence.
“We want our pupils to be outward looking, with the confidence and skills to live and work in the globalised world and it is important they have experiences of other cultures and ways of life.
“Officials from the Chinese Ministry of Education were extremely impressed by the way we are delivering this in Scotland and today’s visit offers us the opportunity to strengthen these links and partnerships to benefit Scottish education.”
