Perth & Kinross Council's commitment to sports development for children and young people will be highlighted in a report to the next Lifelong Learning Committee on Wednesday 21 May 2008.
The Committee will be asked to approve updated priorities for the Council's Sports Development Team following a review of their work in the context of the national sport strategy for Scotland.
The focus for the team is primarily on developing sports clubs with volunteers in the community. The updated priorities cover:
- development of outdoor education
- development of disability sport
- development of three priority sports (athletics, swimming and gymnastics)
- sports club development
- coach development
The report stresses that sports clubs and associations will be formally consulted about the change in priorities for the team. Support for groups would continue to be available in a range of ways alongside the priority sports.
If approved, the revised priorities will come into effect in August 2008.
Lifelong Learning Vice-Convener, Councillor Bob Band said: "The review of the Sports Development Team has shown clear evidence of good practice. This is a reflection of the Council's commitment to supporting the delivery of sports and leisure activities in Perth and Kinross for the benefit of local communities. We want to provide a range of opportunities for children and young people to take part in sport and the updated priorities for the Sports Development Team fit alongside the wider review of leisure provision which is now beginning to move forward."
