Council takes a lead on delivering a Curriculum for Excellence

Delivering a school curriculum designed to meet the needs and abilities of all children and young people is the focus of a report to the next Lifelong Learning Committee on Wednesday 21 May 2008.
Councillors will consider the first in a series of five guidance documents covering arrangements for the creation and roll-out of Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) in Perth and Kinross. This moves from the current, separate curricula for pre-school, primary and secondary pupils to a single unified curriculum which councils and individual schools will then deliver on, taking into account local circumstances and requirements.
The local framework for delivering CfE is intended to ensure that the curriculum is developed in a way which involves everyone with a role to play in the learning process - pupils, parents, teachers and other educators. Specific decisions on developing and implementing the curriculum will be the responsibility of schools, and parental involvement will also be stronger. The Council will build on its existing support for schools to ensure a broad and rich learning experience is available for all pupils in a positive, progressive and inclusive environment.
Lifelong Learning Convener, Councillor Liz Grant said: "Our plans for taking forward Curriculum for Excellence locally are designed to create the conditions needed to achieve the best outcomes for pupils. We want our young people to get the most from their education so they have the skills, knowledge and abilities they need for their future and this is a crucial step in delivering on that aim."
