Map out the route to health and fitness

Last updated | 15/05/2008

Perth and Kinross families will be able to use new walking maps to keep them on the road to a healthy and fit lifestyle.

The series of walking route maps is being launched to mark National Walk to School Week (12-16 May). They are aimed at to encouraging parents to walk to school with their children, as well as enjoy walking as a family activity in their free time.

There are 10 maps in the series, with each map highlighting routes in the vicinity of a cluster of schools. The maps, produced by Perth & Kinross Leisure and funded by Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity, are available in a handy leaflet format and can also be found on the PKL website. Schools are also being encouraged to upload the maps to their websites so that they are readily available for parents and children.

Councillor Liz Grant, the Council’s Lifelong Learning Convener, said: “These maps are a welcome addition to the resources available to schools and the wider community in Perth & Kinross. We all know that walking more is good for our health, and the environment, and these maps will help parents to integrate walking into their daily routine. Hopefully the maps will also encourage parents to cut out the ‘school run’ in the car, and to walk as a family leisure activity in their spare time.

“Walking costs nothing and is easy to do, once you have identified suitable local routes. These maps will be a valuable resource.”

Sophie McCollum, of Perth and Kinross Leisure, added: “The maps will help local families to enjoy all the benefits of this simple, cheap and simple activity."
