Last updated | 08/05/2008

The winners of Perth & Kinross Council’s first Securing the Future Awards for staff were announced at Perth Concert Hall this week.

The awards were set up to recognise teams of employees involved in projects that have demonstrated high levels of achievement. Teams were asked to submit an entry, or nominate the work of colleagues for an award.

The categories for awards were:

* Securing the Future (improving services, enhancing the quality of life or making best use of public resources)
* Community Engagement
* Promoting Sustainability
* Equalities
* Provost's Award - Discretionary award for outstanding submissions in any category

The winning teams were:

Category 1, Securing the Future - Greyfriars House
Employees from Greyfriars homeless hostel in Perth and the Council's Homeless Service identified and carried out a project with the result that staff are now providing a unique service, that puts Greyfriars and its residents at the hub of a network of support, care, advocacy and counselling.

Category 2, Community Engagement - StArt Festival
The StArt Festival is believed now to be the largest participatory arts festival of its kind in Scotland. The Festival has been developed in partnership with local communities in eastern Perthshire to make arts activities available to people who would not otherwise have the opportunity.

Category 3, Sustainability - Roads and Lighting Defects Project
Staff from the Council and contractor Tayside Contracts undertook a review that has resulted in a more responsive, efficient and sustainable approach to defect repairs.

Category 4, Equalities - Supported Living Team
Staff in the Council's Learning Disabilities Service changed and developed their service and as a result are achieving a major life change for the people who use it. By evolving from residential care to supported living services, the Supported Living Team is enabling adults with learning disabilities to live independently in the community

Provost’s Award - Single Status Team
The Policy Team of Human Resources developed and implemented Single Status terms and conditions of employment for the majority of employees of Perth & Kinross Council.

Councillor Ian Miller, Leader of the Council, said: “This Council's success is only possible because of the dedication and enthusiasm our workforce. These awards are a celebration of the vital work undertaken on a daily basis across the Council as a whole.”

Bernadette Malone, Chief Executive added: “I am very proud all of our staff. I would like to thank them for all their hard work, dedication and loyalty.

"We are a council on a journey to excellence. These awards demonstrated  examples of excellence in every single service.

"I believe we have something special here in Perth and Kinross. We can be at the leading edge of successful councils in Scotland, and we can achieve that because the quality of our staff gives us that edge.”
