Unlock your potential with an Open University Openings course

Last updated | 31/05/2008

The North Perth Community Learning & Development Partnership, led by Perth & Kinross Council, and the Open University are working together to widen learning opportunities for people in their communities. Designed for people of all ages, from all educational backgrounds, the OU’s Openings courses are designed as a gentle introduction to further study or perhaps a work-based qualification depending on personal interests.

A wide range of subjects are available to choose from; as well as arts, social sciences, maths and technology, there are courses on psychology , the environment and management together with more vocational subjects such as health and social care.

Courses can last up to 20 weeks, studying six to eight hours a week at home and all materials are delivered to your door. A personal tutor will provide support and feedback , and a local ‘study buddy’ group is also running. At the end of the course, a learning adviser will discuss what further options are available.

Openings courses cost £110. There is the option for anyone earning less than £18,000 per year to apply for an ILA (Independent Learning Account) worth £200, but some people may be entitled to a fee waiver, enabling them to take the course free of charge. A local learning worker will be able to provide advice on applying for an ILA or entitlement to the fee waiver.

Information sessions about the Openings courses will be held on Wednesday 4 June at Fairfield Neighbourhood Centre. To book a place at these sessions and to arrange a crèche place if required, please phone 01738 622256. For more details about Openings Courses please call Caroline Moore on 07977 368167.
