Veterans invited to take part in major celebration

Last updated | 12/05/2008

Veterans of the Army's 51st Highland Division and other Second World War Veterans are being invited to take part in a major celebration of the Division in Perth on Sunday 8 June 2008.

A unique tapestry depicting the contribution of the 51st Highland Division in the Second World War will be dedicated during a special service in St John’s Kirk of Perth, which will take place on Sunday 8 June at 11.00 am.

After the service, the 51st Highland Division Veterans’ Association is organising a parade of veterans which will be joined by serving soldiers from the 51st Highland, 7th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, Territorial Army members and army cadets who will also march through Perth City Centre, with musical accompaniment from pipes and drums and a military band. The parade will be closely followed by a display of World War II vehicles.

The salute will be taken by the Lord Lieutenant of Perth & Kinross Brigadier Melville Jameson and Provost John Hulbert before the parade gathers at the 51st Highland Division Memorial on the North Inch for a remembrance service led by the Very Reverend Dr. James Harkness. The Glasgow University Air Squadron will perform a flypast in honour of this final gathering of veterans.

The Provost said: "We are delighted to be supporting the 51st Highland Division Veterans' Association with their plans for a special parade and service in Perth. The Division has long-standing links with the local area and the contribution and sacrifice made by the veterans during the Second World War should never be forgotten. I would like to encourage any veterans who are not part of the Association and would like to take part in the parade to contact the Council."

Veterans (both men and women) wishing to take part in the parade should contact Judy Harris, Civic Services Manager at Perth & Kinross Council, 2 High Street, Perth PH1 5PH or telephone 01738 475058.
