Work continues on alcohol byelaw extension
Last updated | 27/05/2008
Work is ongoing to further extend existing byelaws in Perth and Kinross that prevent the consumption of alcohol in public places.
The Council previously approved proposals to extend the byelaws to include Scone, Aberfeldy, Coupar Angus, Errol, and Dunkeld and Birnam.
Following communication with the Scottish Government's Criminal Justice Division, public notices will be placed in the local press on Tuesday 27 May 2008, notifying of the proposed extensions and giving members of the public one month to register any objections.
If no objections are received, confirmation of the amending byelaws would be sought from Scottish Ministers and a further public notice would then be published, with the byelaws coming into effect approximately one month after confirmation. However, if any objections are received, the Scottish Ministers would have to decide whether a local inquiry is required.
Council Leader, Councillor Ian Miller said: "The Council is now part of the way through the process of extending the alcohol byelaws in Perth and Kinross. We appreciate that the vast majority of people drink responsibly - what we are looking to achieve, through the proposed extension, is to continue and widen the benefits already felt by local communities as a result of the existing byelaws.
"Part of Perth and Kinross Council's overall vision is to ensure that we have a safe, secure and welcoming environment as well as healthy and caring communities. This extension of the alcohol byelaws will help to ensure that local communities have the necessary safeguards to improve the wellbeing of their areas. By working together with our community planning partners, particularly Tayside Police, we are committed to reducing the impact of alcohol-related crime and disorder thereby improving the quality of life across all of our communities. I welcome this important step along that road."
