Perth 800 celebrations take-off in June

The Perth 800 celebrations will really take-off during June, when the Heart of Scotland Airshow is held at Perth Airport.

Aviation greats like the Spitfire, Hurricane and Typhoon will all feature in the aerial spectacular, and the world's only formation wing-walking display team, the Breitling Wingwalkers, will also take to the skies.

The stunning Team Swift will give a display of formation and solo aerobatics, and visitors will also get the chance to take part in pleasure flights aboard a helicopter or a vintage airliner. On the ground there will be a fun fair, a food court, and other attractions for all the family. The Airshow will be held on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 June. For more information visit the Airshow's official website

Culture

On the cultural side of the June celebrations, the Perth Youth Theatre Festival will showcase six new theatre productions throughout the month. Perth Youth Theatre is a thriving theatre company for young people aged from 12-25, with 150 members. The Perth Youth Theatre Festival takes place between 11-30 June and comprises a huge range of work from new writing, devised performances and adaptations of the classics. For more information please visit the Horsecross website

On the weekend of 5-6 June the Perthshire Visual Arts Forum will see a weekend of inspirational art-based events held at Perth Museum and Art Gallery and Birnam Institute. Artists Victoria Edwards and Ina Johann from New Zealand will undertake a residency in Perth Museum and Art Gallery where they will create an open working studio in Gallery 3.

They will also be featured speakers at Perthshire Visual Arts Forum in Birnam on the 5 & 6 June, and their work will culminate in a final project being unveiled at Lightnight Perth in November. More information is available at http://www.pvaf.org.uk/

June is also Perthshire Archaeology Month 2010, which will offer a range of first-class events focusing on the archaeology of Perth and Kinross with Perth 800 as a key theme. Many events and activities have been organised to celebrate the history and archaeology of Perth. One of the highlights will be the Late Bronze Age crafts event - which will let people take part in a variety of prehistoric crafts. Full details can be found at Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust website or the Perthshire archaeology website

Packed summer programme

Other Perth 800 events lined-up for June include the 10th annual Volunteers Street Market (King Edward Street, Perth on Saturday 12 June between 10am-3pm) which will feature a wide variety of stalls and street entertainment; Perth Tennis Club's '800 Mixed Tournament' championship on 20 June; and the IBike mass cycle ride by schoolchildren in Perth on June 20.

Of course, we begin June with a Perth 800 Royal visit from HRH Prince Charles, making it a very special and memorable month. I hope everyone enjoys that prestigious occasion, and also enjoys the range of events that have been lined-up for June."
