creativity in the UK’s cities.

| "Best wishes for the success of the campaign to restore City
Status to Perth.
This would be a fitting conclusion to the celebrations marking
the 800 years since the granting of the Royal Burgh Charter."

''I support Perth being restored to City
Status. I would support the claim. I wonder, if the citizens of
Perth and surroundings could be asked to support the initiative
– would be a strong force – a signed petition to Her
Majesty The Queen.
Perth deserves, restoration to City Status.''
Naren Patel, House of Lords
|
| "Perth has played a huge role in the history of Scotland
restoration of City status would be befitting to its heritage and
its current ambitions.
Perth and Perthshire are the home of many well known names such
as The Gleneagles Hotel, Highland Spring, Vector Aerospace as well
as having other major employers in the area such as Aviva and
indeed St Johnstone, a Premier League football team.
With plans for Kinross to host the Scottish Curling Centre of
Excellence, it is clear to see that Perth and the surrounding area
continue to have high and influential ambitions that would
undoubtedly be boosted even further by securing City status."
Jim Murphy, Secretary of State for Scotland
|
| "Perth is a thriving city in all sorts of
areas such as commercial, cultural (including the important Black
Watch regimental museum), sporting and medical areas, and I believe
should be recognised as having city status."
Peter Stormonth Darling
|
| "Perth is the pearl on the Tay!
800 years old and thriving: a Fair City in every way and
deserves to recognised as such!"
Roseanna Cunningham MSP
|
| "Perth’s long history and tradition
as a great Scottish city, having been not only an ancient capital
but also a seat of Kings, parliaments and church, make it one of
Scotland’s premier cities.
I support the formal restoration of City status as it would
confirm in status that which exists by current tradition and
popular acclaim."
Viscount Thurso MP
|
| "Perth 800 will be a year to remember for Perth. 2010
will see the rest of Scotland and the United Kingdom looking in as
we celebrate 800 years of history and aim for full legal city
status.
Perth is its own city in its own right. We are a city and
we deserve to have the legal rights of a city. I am delighted
to support the Provost and Lord Lieutenant’s Claim Document
and I wish it every success."
Murdo Fraser MSP
|
| "I am delighted to support the claim by the
historic fair city of Perth for the restoration of its ancient
status of City. Apart from its unique place in
Scotland’s history, Perth is a vibrant and expanding area
whose geographical situation between the lowlands and highlands
makes it a natural bridge between the two.
In 2010 as it celebrates its 800 Anniversary, it would be a
fitting recognition of the past and of Perth’s place in a
modern Scotland, for City Status once again to be accorded."
Dr Richard Simpson MSP
|
| "Perth is one of the most beautiful, innovative and
enterprising establishments in the United Kingdom, and is
undoubtedly worthy of the accolade of City.
It was tragic that this title was taken from Perth in 1975, and
I trust that this omission can be rectified as soon as possible in
order that Perth can assume its rightful place among the Scottish
cities."
The Rt Hon Lord Macfarlane of Bearsden KT

| ''The international status of Perthshire,
reinforced by the G8 at Gleneagles in 2005 is a symbol of what
Perthshire means to the world.''
Gordon Banks MP
|
| ''Perth is Scotland’s first city, and should never have
lost its City Status. As the gateway for the Highlands, and
the centre of Scotland’s first parliament, Perth is the
outstanding candidate for City Status.''
Michael Fallon MP
|
| ''Perth produced John Buchan (born there,
1875) sociologist Patrick Geddes (lived there 1870 – 1885)
and painter J D Ferguson (whose paintings are there), let alone
MacBeth, Malcolm, etc ‘seated’ at Scone.''
Professor Christopher Harvie MSP
|
| ''Perth’s claim for the restoration of its city status is
an overwhelming one. Its importance historically, socially
and politically is impressive and its present and future is in the
forefront in Scotland’s growth and development – it
really deserves to succeed in this bid.''
Baroness Veronica Linklater, House of Lords

| "City status is a rare honour granted by
the British Monarch. It is a title which must be earned since
it reflects the privilege of being a long-standing and major centre
of industry and enterprise as well as the respect earned by the
strength of historical tradition and contribution to social
development. Since the days of King David I in the early 12th
century, Perth has been at the very heart of Scotland.
Over the centuries, whether crowning Scottish Kings, helping to
establish the Reformation or promoting commerce and tourism, it has
responded successfully to the many challenges of social,
economic and cultural development. Its proud achievement in
recent times of receiving the accolade of being one of the most
vibrant communities in the UK suggests that it can equal, if not
surpass, the attraction of many other towns which have been
accorded City Status. As an MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, it
is a privilege to represent the many local communities whose
livelihood depends so much upon the success of the Fair City of
Perth and so I lend my full support to the bid which seeks
restoration of City Status."
Elizabeth J Smith MSP

| ''From my earliest childhood memories I have been aware of the
importance of Perth. Its history, its geographical position
in the road and rail networks in Scotland, its grandeur and style
and the multiplicity of activities which happen there create a
significance which is truly remarkable.
Most recently Perth staged the National Festival of the Order of
St John which was a great success and hugely enjoyed by the many
who attended from all over Scotland because they realised that it
was a venue of appropriate status. All could relate to Perth
as worthy of national importance.
I wholeheartedly support Perth’s bid for the Restoration
of its City Status.''
Lieutenant Colonel Sir Malcolm Ross GCVO OBE
