Census 2001
The Census took place on 29th April 2001 and was designed to collect a wide range of information on the resident population.
Population The population of Perth and Kinross on Census night was 134,949. This represents an increase of 6.9% compared to an increase in Scotland as a whole of 1.3%. Comparison with other local authority areas suggests that, over this period, Perth and Kinross had the fifth fastest growing population in Scotland.
Gender Of the 5,062,011 residents in Scotland on Census Day, 48% were male and 52% female. The gender split was broadly similar in Perth and Kinross where 48.3% were male and 51.7% were female.
Age structure A comparison of the age profile of Perth and Kinross and the age profile of Scotland shows that there is a slightly higher proportion of older age groups resident in Perth and Kinross.
The 2001 Census found that 10 per cent of residents in Perth and Kinross were aged between 65 and 75 and a further 8.6 per cent aged over 75 years. This compares to 8.8 per cent aged between 65 and 75 and 7.1 per cent aged 75 and over in Scotland as a whole. The older age profile is reflected in that the average age of the population in Perth and Kinross is 41 years, slightly higher than the national average age of 39 years.
Comparison with the 1991 Census suggests that the proportion of people aged 75 and over has increased slightly - from 8.2 per cent in 1991 to 8.8 per cent in 2001.
